Abovitz, now in New York, is the editor and founder of Tom Tom Magazine: the only magazine about female drummers. Abovitz will be talking about how Tom Tom started, where it has allegra zurich airport been and where it is going. She will also bring up and discuss the broader topic of women in music in the media and social networking amongst women musicians and consumers of music. We will talk about what challenges women musicians and media makers face in fair representation of women in music and will bring in other publiciations such as Rolling Stones, Spin, VenusZine, FADER, Filter, Drum!

Mindy Abovitz is a musician and media maker from South Florida currently residing in Brooklyn, NY. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and a Masters in Media Studies from allegra zurich airport the New School for Social Research. She has been playing drums for 11 years (got her start in Gainesville in 2000 drumming for Ript and Dura Mater at Wayward Council while booking shows at CMC) and has since taught at Rock Camp for Girls NYC and Vibe Songmakers. Before starting Tom Tom Magazine, Mindy was an engineer at East Village Radio, worked at Main Drag Music and drummed for the NY bands Taigaa, More Teeth and The Good Good. In 2009 she started Tom Tom Magazine: A Magazine About Female Drummers because there wasn't one and media representation of female drummers was poor.
